TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's weather agency announced Friday (Oct. 3) that Tropical Storm Matmo will bypass the island directly but warned its outer bands will bring scattered showers to eastern and southern counties during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday weekend. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) confirmed the storm's westward trajectory poses no immediate threat to Taiwan proper.

Weather forecasters identified potential storm activity for next week's National Day holiday, with the Taiwan "Typhoon Forum - Weather Express" (台灣颱風論壇|天氣特急) predicting possible Typhoon Halong formation. The 22nd storm of the year could emerge from a developing low-pressure system offshore, though AI models show significant uncertainty in trajectory predictions. Google's FNV3 model indicates high variability in the storm's potential path.

Weekend weather patterns will shift significantly, with Saturday bringing brief thunderstorms to Taitung and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) while Hualien and Pingtung experience scattered showers. Conditions improve by Sunday (Oct. 5) as moisture levels decrease, creating mostly sunny weather across Taiwan. Only isolated afternoon storms will affect southern coastal areas and mountain regions.

Temperatures will soar across Taiwan, ranging from 31 to 33 degrees Celsius (87.8 to 91.4°F) in eastern regions and reaching 36 degrees Celsius (96.8°F) in western areas. The CWA has issued heat advisories, urging residents to prepare for potentially dangerous conditions during the holiday weekend. ◼
