TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) emphasized Taiwan's commitment to creating an inclusive society Monday (Oct. 27). She addressed the 27th Conference of the Asian Federation on Intellectual Disabilities (亞洲智能障礙聯盟雙年會議), highlighting government efforts to foster community environments that uphold human rights and individual well-being.
The conference, organized by National Taiwan Normal University (台灣師範大學) and the Special Education Association of the Republic of China (中華民國特殊教育學會), runs from Oct. 26 to Oct. 31. The international gathering brings together delegates from approximately 20 countries under the theme "Equity, Participation & Well-Being," representing a significant regional collaboration on disability rights.
Vice President Hsiao addressed the opening ceremony, underscoring Taiwan's ongoing promotion of people-centered policy development across government initiatives. She stated the government aims to create comprehensive community environments where everyone, including those with physical and intellectual disabilities, can achieve meaningful self-fulfillment and participate fully in society.
Hsiao noted the collective participation of Asian countries in the conference, demonstrating shared commitment to advancing disability-related well-being. She expressed hope that collaboration and exchange will promote development opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The goal is realizing a society where no one is left behind.
