TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) emphasized Taiwan's commitment to creating an inclusive society Monday (Oct. 27). She addressed the 27th Conference of the Asian Federation on Intellectual Disabilities (亞洲智能障礙聯盟雙年會議), highlighting government efforts to foster community environments that uphold human rights and individual well-being.

The conference, organized by National Taiwan Normal University (台灣師範大學) and the Special Education Association of the Republic of China (中華民國特殊教育學會), runs from Oct. 26 to Oct. 31. The international gathering brings together delegates from approximately 20 countries under the theme "Equity, Participation & Well-Being," representing a significant regional collaboration on disability rights.

Vice President Hsiao addressed the opening ceremony, underscoring Taiwan's ongoing promotion of people-centered policy development across government initiatives. She stated the government aims to create comprehensive community environments where everyone, including those with physical and intellectual disabilities, can achieve meaningful self-fulfillment and participate fully in society.

Hsiao noted the collective participation of Asian countries in the conference, demonstrating shared commitment to advancing disability-related well-being. She expressed hope that collaboration and exchange will promote development opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The goal is realizing a society where no one is left behind.

Organizing Committee Chair Li-Yu Hung (洪儷瑜), a professor in the Department of Special Education at National Taiwan Normal University, noted Taiwan is hosting this significant event for the third time. Previous conferences occurred in 1985 and 2007. This reinforces Taiwan's international cooperation with Asian countries in fostering inclusive societies. ◼
