TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) commended Taiwan's delegation at the Office of the President (總統府) on Monday (Oct. 27) for their outstanding performance at the 21st World Police and Fire Games (WPFG). The event, held in the United States, saw participants from over 70 countries, with Taiwan's team securing a record-breaking 168 medals, including 74 gold, 46 silver, and 48 bronze, showcasing their exceptional skills and spirit.
Lai highlighted the games as the Olympics of the police and firefighting community, where Taiwanese athletes excelled in events such as judo, taekwondo, and shooting. Firefighters demonstrated their prowess in extreme firefighter challenges. He attributed their success to rigorous training, which not only secured medals but also displayed Taiwan's strength and skill to the world.
Lai expressed gratitude to Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳), National Police Agency (警政署) Director-General Chang Jung-hsing (張榮興), and National Fire Agency (NFA, 消防署) Director-General Hsiao Huan-chang (蕭煥章). He praised the dedication of all police and firefighting personnel in safeguarding lives and property, stating that those who strive to make society better are all considered heroes.
Lai emphasized the importance of using competitions as training platforms to enhance international engagement and continually improve their skills. He also acknowledged their efforts in disaster preparedness and recovery, reinforcing their role as courageous superheroes and heroes of society. The delegation, led by National Police Agency Deputy Director-General Liao Mei-ling (廖美鈴), was accompanied by key officials as they headed to the Office of the President.
