TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) announced Monday (Oct. 27) that heavy rain and strong winds will hit the island through Tuesday (Oct. 28), causing a significant weather shift in Taiwan. The rain, moving from South China, will impact the northern coast of Keelung, the greater Taipei mountain area, and the northeast with torrential rain.

Forecaster Lin Ting-yi (林定宜) forecasted extended rainfall in the northern coast of Keelung, the northeast, and the greater Taipei mountain area on Wednesday, with particularly heavy rain in the northeast. Regions north of Taoyuan, Hualien, Taitung, the Hsinchu and Miaoli mountain area, and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) will see isolated showers. Meanwhile, other regions will transition from cloudy to sunny with brief afternoon showers in the southern and central mountain areas.

Thursday will see a weakening northeast monsoon and a shift to easterly winds, reducing moisture and raising temperatures in northern and northeastern areas. Isolated showers will persist along the northern coast of Keelung, the east, and Hengchun, with partly cloudy to sunny skies elsewhere and scattered afternoon showers in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and mountain areas.

Looking ahead to Friday, a stronger northeast monsoon will bring cooler temperatures to the north and northeast. Lin warns of potential temperatures dropping below 20 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan from Sunday (Nov. 2) night through Monday (Nov. 3) morning. The monsoon will also generate strong coastal winds and waves, urging caution for those near the coast.
