TAIPEI (TVBS News) — China launched a criminal investigation Tuesday (Oct. 28) against Taiwan legislator Puma Shen (沈伯洋) for alleged secession crimes. The Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau (重慶公安局) reportedly targeted the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator. Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO, 國台辦) spokesperson Chen Bin-hua (陳斌華) confirmed the investigation implements China's policy against Taiwan independence supporters.
In response to reports, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) immediately condemned the move, asserting China lacks jurisdiction over Taiwan. MAC emphasized Chinese laws hold no authority over Taiwanese citizens protected under Taiwan's Constitution. The move represents escalating cross-strait tensions over Taiwan's political status.
MAC warned China against cross-border oppression attempts, stating intimidation strategies will fail. The council urged citizens to exercise caution when traveling to China due to potential illegal arrests. MAC called on the public to safeguard national security and avoid illegal activities with China.
China previously sanctioned Shen and Kuma Academy (黑熊學院) last year for alleged Taiwan independence activities. In June, China penalized Shen's father Shen Tu-cheng (沈土城) and his company Sicuens International (兆億). The sanctions banned all business dealings with China for the targeted individuals and organizations. ◼
