TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a pivotal meeting set for tomorrow, U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will discuss trade and geopolitics, including Taiwan. National Security Bureau (NSB, 國安局) Director-General Tsai Ming-yen (蔡明彥) revealed the analysis at the Legislative Yuan's (立法院) Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee's session (外交及國防委員會) on Wednesday (Oct. 29). He emphasized that Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the U.S. will not trade Taiwan's interests for economic concessions from China.
Tsai addressed analyzing East Asian dynamics. He highlighted Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's (高市早苗) affirmation of the U.S.-Japan alliance's importance, particularly the stability in the Taiwan Strait. Tsai noted that the recent U.S.-China trade negotiations in Malaysia set a positive tone for the upcoming summit.
Tsai identified potential discussion points at the Trump-Xi meeting, such as fentanyl, rare earth exports, and TikTok, showcasing efforts to manage disputes positively. He acknowledged the complexity of structural issues like national security and technology controls, which require more intricate solutions. He assured. If Taiwan becomes a formal topic, the U.S. will communicate its stance through diplomatic channels.
Following the Trump-Xi meeting in November, China will conduct its large-scale military exercises in the end of the year. Tsai confirmed the NSB will collaborate with the Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) and international allies to monitor Chinese military activities.
