TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's military established an Artificial Intelligence Project Office (人工智慧專案辦公室) on Oct. 1 to consolidate defense AI activities. Strategic Planning Department head Huang Wen-chi (黃文啓) announced the office's creation to the Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament, Thursday (Nov. 6). The Defense Innovation Unit (國防創新小組) focuses on image recognition, computer protection, and anti-hacking technologies for military applications.
Defense Minister Wellington Koo (顧立雄) revealed the AI office remains in trial phase with no expansion timeline during Legislative Yuan committee questioning. Koo addressed the Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee (外交及國防委員會), a parliamentary defense panel, about unmanned vehicle combat integration strategies. The Minister outlined the Defense Ministry's technological advancement approach while fielding questions about AI implementation progress.
The AI office coordinates requirements across military units while officials plan gradual expansion based on investment project needs. Huang emphasized expansion depends on AI technology maturity and development progress within Taiwan's defense sector. The Ministry adopts a phased approach allowing careful planning and strategic integration of artificial intelligence capabilities. ◼
