TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologist Wu Sheng-yu (吳聖宇) announced on Tuesday (Nov. 6) that Typhoon Fung-wong (鳳凰) is expected to influence Taiwan's weather from Nov. 11. Wu indicated a significant possibility that the typhoon could pass over Taiwan, urging residents to remain vigilant and prepare in advance.
Wu explained that Fung-wong will pass through Luzon on Nov. 10 and enter the South China Sea, turning north near the southern Taiwan Strait the next day. The typhoon will pass over Taiwan on Nov. 12 and move away from the island's northeastern coast by Nov. 13. Despite a potential weakening in intensity, Wu emphasized that Fung-wong's extensive circulation system could still considerably impact Taiwan with wind and rain.
Wu noted that if the typhoon's intensity continues to weaken and its speed increases, the duration of its impact on Taiwan might shorten. He advised that from the night of Nov. 10 to Nov. 11, residents in Greater Taipei and Yilan should be on the lookout for rainfall. By Wednesday, the typhoon itself will influence the weather, eliminating the companion effect.
In a related development, the Central Weather Administration's (CWA, 中央氣象署) Space Weather Operational Office (太空天氣作業辦公室) issued a geomagnetic storm alert on Tuesday. A coronal mass ejection on Monday (Nov. 5) increased solar wind speed and density, with the storm expected to commence at 5 a.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 7). The CWA warned of potential disruptions to satellite navigation and radio communications.
