TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan authorities issued a land typhoon warning Tuesday (Nov. 11) as Typhoon Fung-wong (鳳凰颱風) threatens southern regions. The storm moved north-northeast from waters southwest of Cape Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻), directly targeting Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島). Meteorologist Wu Sheng-yu (吳聖宇) predicted the typhoon would shift southward, creating significant danger for southern Taiwan.
Wu forecasts the typhoon's storm circle will reach southern coastlines by early Wednesday (Nov. 12) morning. The storm center could make landfall Wednesday afternoon, according to his predictions. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's meteorological agency, expanded warnings to include Tainan, Taitung, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and the Hengchun Peninsula. Officials extended sea warnings across the entire Taiwan Strait.
Authorities suspended work and classes Tuesday in Taoyuan City, Yilan County, Hualien County, and Penghu County due to the approaching storm. Taipei City halted activities in 12 neighborhoods while New Taipei City closed seven districts. Wu noted the typhoon's outer circulation converged with the northeast monsoon, producing heavy rainfall across eastern regions.
Yilan County's Nan'ao Township recorded 330 millimeters of rainfall Monday (Nov. 10), nearing the 350-millimeter torrential rain threshold. The CWA warned nine counties, including Hualien and areas south of Chiayi, face a 90% probability of storm impact within 120 hours. Rainfall measurements at Ximaoshan (南澳西帽山) approached dangerous levels as the typhoon's outer bands reached Taiwan.
