TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Northern Taiwan faces its coldest temperatures of autumn Wednesday (Nov. 19), with New Taipei's Shimen District recording 12.4 degrees Celsius (54.3°F). Meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) warns temperatures could drop to 12 degrees Celsius (53.6°F) in north Miaoli Thursday.
Taipei's Nangang District hit 13.6 degrees Celsius (56.5°F), while the main Taipei weather station recorded 16 degrees Celsius (60.8°F). Wu noted the cold front represents the strongest autumn chill despite not qualifying as a "continental cold air mass." Northern regions experienced temperatures ranging from 12 to 18 degrees Celsius (53.6°F to 64.4°F).
Mountain regions saw freezing conditions with Nantou's Yushan hitting minus 0.7 degrees Celsius (30.7°F), meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) reported on Facebook page "Lin's Weather Station" (林老師氣象站). Taichung's Heping recorded 0.6 degrees Celsius (33.1°F). Lienchiang's Nangan island registered 12.1 degrees Celsius (53.8°F).
Lin explained northern Taiwan experienced daytime highs of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius (60.8°F to 64.4°F), while other regions reached 20 degrees Celsius (68°F) or higher. Southern areas could hit 25 to 27 degrees Celsius (77°F to 80.6°F), creating temperature differences exceeding 10 degrees Celsius (18°F) between north and south. Short-term rain will affect northern and eastern regions, with similar conditions expected Thursday. ◼
