TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (外交部) responded to a high-level call between Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) and U.S. President Donald Trump during a press conference on Tuesday (Nov. 25). Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) led the session, addressing concerns about Xi's emphasis on Taiwan's return to China as a key part of the postwar international order.
During the press conference, Hsiao stated that the ministry closely monitors U.S.-China dialogue and will continue working with the U.S. to maintain regional peace and stability. Hsiao criticized China's news statement for distorting Taiwan's sovereign status, accusing China of misinterpreting WWII documents to pressure Taiwan. He asserted that these documents, along with relevant U.N. rights, do not determine Taiwan's final political status.
Hsiao reaffirmed that the Republic of China is a sovereign and independent nation, separate from the People's Republic of China. He highlighted Taiwan's dedication to promoting regional prosperity and maintaining peace and stability throughout the region and the Taiwan Strait.
Deputy Minister Wu Chih-chung (吳志中) confirmed on Monday (Nov. 24) morning that Taiwan has received policy recommendations from the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC, 美國經濟暨安全檢討委員會). However, the ministry has not yet discussed these suggestions. The USCC advised Taiwan to consider funding upgrades for military bases in the Philippines and to support Japan's southwestern islands through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.
