TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) attended Tuesday (Nov. 25) the opening of national Mission Readiness Test certification for rescue dogs at Zhushan Fire Training Center (竹山消防訓練中心) in Nantou County, central Taiwan. Hsiao expressed support for 20 Taiwan-Japan handler-rescue dog teams undergoing certification. The event aligns Taiwan's rescue dog training with international standards.
Hsiao emphasized the critical role rescue dogs play during disasters, highlighting their ability to navigate tight spaces and bring hope to those in need. She referenced the 'Taiwan can help' spirit and reflected on establishing a retirement adoption system for military dogs during her legislative term. Hsiao gifted toys to the rescue dogs during the event.
The Mission Readiness Test certification connects to the International Search and Rescue Dog Organisation (IRO), requiring rescue dogs to pass initial, intermediate, and advanced levels. Successfully certified dogs can participate in overseas rescue missions. Hsiao mentioned former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) adopted a retired rescue dog through the adoption initiative she contributed to. ◼
