TAIPEI (TVBS News) — German Institute Taipei (德國在台協會) Director General Karsten Tietz met with Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) Tuesday (Nov. 25) to discuss expanding economic and cultural cooperation between Germany and Taiwan's central city. The Taichung City Government announced Wednesday (Nov. 26) that Lu thanked Germany for increased investment and highlighted the strong trade relationship.

Lu emphasized shared democratic values between Taiwan and Germany while highlighting Taichung's industrial strengths in precision machinery and semiconductors. The mayor noted the city provides financial support for local industry associations attending German trade fairs in 2025. She expressed hope for expanded bilateral cooperation.

 

Tietz underscored Germany's commitment to freedom and human rights amid the Russia-Ukraine war, recognizing Taiwan as a key political and economic partner. Lu praised Germany's international support and asserted that peace, security, justice, and democratic freedom represent universal aspirations. The mayor highlighted efforts to increase Taichung's global visibility through foreign collaborations and invited the German Institute Taipei to host events locally.

Tietz expressed interest in promoting collaborations in technology, academia, and culture while hoping to introduce German delegations to Taichung. Lu welcomed the initiatives and noted the city's 17 universities and significance in semiconductors and precision technology for talent training and exchanges. The mayor highlighted Taichung's cultural heritage and creative teams, inviting the German Institute Taipei to engage in cultural activities. ◼
