TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Miaoli County's Gongguan Township (公館鄉) recorded Taiwan's lowest autumn temperature Wednesday (Nov. 26) at 11.7 degrees Celsius (53.1°F) as the northeast monsoon brought cooler weather across the island. Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's meteorological agency, forecaster Lai Hsin-kuo (賴欣國) reported the significant temperature drop affected regions nationwide.
Lai noted daytime temperatures rose gradually while northern Taiwan experienced cloudy skies and rain throughout Wednesday. Central and southern regions faced large temperature differences between day and night. Upper-level moisture approaching the island will increase rain likelihood in northern, eastern areas, and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島), Taiwan's southern tip.
The CWA reported morning temperatures ranged from 15 to 17 degrees Celsius (59 to 62.6°F) in northern regions and Yilan, northeastern Taiwan, while southern and eastern areas recorded 18 to 20 degrees Celsius (64.4 to 68°F). Lai warned of strong gusts in areas north of Tainan, southwestern Taiwan, and along Keelung's northern coast, with waves reaching 2 to 3 meters (6.6 to 9.8 feet) along eastern shores.
Weather expert Chia Hsin-hsing (賈新興) predicted weaker cold air this winter may reduce significant cold fronts due to global warming's impact on northern cold air formation. Chia forecast a warmer December and advised residents to prepare for temperature fluctuations during early mornings and nights. ◼
