TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan faces a cold snap by Wednesday (Dec. 3) as strengthening northeast monsoon winds will drop northern temperatures to around 12 degrees Celsius (53.6°F), the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's national weather bureau, warned Monday (Dec. 1). Mid-level cloud systems brought sporadic rainfall south of Hsinchu Monday, with brief showers hitting Taoyuan, Yilan, and mountainous central and southern regions. Morning and evening temperatures ranged from 18 to 22 degrees Celsius (64.4 to 71.6°F), warming to 26 to 29 degrees Celsius (78.8 to 84.2°F) during the day.
Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) reported Monday morning observations showed scattered mid-to-high clouds over Taiwan, with weak precipitation echoes passing through northern areas. European weather model simulations indicate slightly increased cloud cover nationwide Monday, with comfortable daytime temperatures and occasional light rain forecast for northern and eastern regions, Wu added. The meteorologist emphasized current conditions remain stable despite approaching weather system changes.
The northeast monsoon will strengthen Wednesday (Dec. 3), bringing colder air southward and dropping northern Taiwan temperatures to around 12 degrees Celsius (53.6°F) at ground level, Wu predicted. Moisture levels will increase slightly Tuesday (Dec. 2) due to the approaching northeast monsoon system, leading to brief showers in Greater Taipei and eastern regions along with a slight temperature drop. Residents should prepare for noticeably cooler conditions by midweek as the weather system intensifies.
Wu advised residents to prepare for brief showers in Taoyuan and eastern regions Wednesday (Dec. 3) as the monsoon system reaches peak intensity. Moisture levels will decrease slightly Thursday and Friday (Dec. 4-5), with brief rain expected in windward areas, particularly along northeastern coastlines, the meteorologist added. Weather conditions should gradually stabilize heading into the weekend.
