TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Metro (台北捷運公司) will launch QR code ticketing in January, synchronizing with the bus system to support multiple electronic payment platforms. The metro operator announced the initiative on Sunday (Dec. 7), enabling passengers to use LINE Pay and iCash Pay for transit payments. The system aims to enhance convenience for commuters and tourists using the capital's public transportation network.

Taipei Metro completed hardware setup for the Electronic Gate Main Unit Module Reset Project (閘門電子主單元模組重置案) in October, according to the operator's announcement. The metro system finished bidding and testing for ticketing services, preparing the infrastructure for the January launch of QR code payments. The new system represents a significant modernization step for the capital's public transportation infrastructure and passenger convenience.

The metro will support nine electronic payment platforms, including TWQR, Easy Wallet, iPASS MONEY, Jko Pay, and Taishin Pay for passenger convenience. Additional supported platforms include E.SUN Wallet, PXPay Plus, PLUS PAY, and LINE Pay, offering comprehensive digital payment options for all users. Taipei Metro plans to integrate these systems to ensure seamless transaction processing, data transmission, and account reconciliation across all platforms.

Passengers can use physical credit cards or link them to Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay for contactless payment options during transit. Taipei Metro has been testing the credit card feature for over six months, with a full system rollout planned for July next year. The feature will enable users to enter stations by tapping their phones without needing to unlock them first, streamlining the boarding process.

Taipei Metro explained the collaboration between acquiring banks and Apple Inc. to develop the Apple Pay fast mode feature specifically for iPhone users. Testing for the feature continues, with successful results expected to enable a more efficient and streamlined entry process by July next year. The fast mode feature will significantly enhance the overall user experience for iPhone passengers entering metro stations across the system.

The development aligns Taipei Metro with international standards used in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Singapore's advanced transit payment systems. The initiative aims to make the capital's public transit system significantly more tourist-friendly and accessible for international visitors exploring the city. The seamless payment system will offer a more convenient and efficient travel experience for tourists navigating Taipei's extensive metro network. ◼
