TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's national meteorological agency, issued a heavy rain advisory Tuesday (Dec. 9) for northern and northeastern Taiwan as cooler temperatures arrive. Keelung's north coast, Greater Taipei's mountainous regions, and northeastern areas experience rainfall with temperatures ranging from 18 to 23 degrees Celsius (64 to 73°F) in northern Taiwan. The weather shift marks the beginning of a cold front expected to intensify through the weekend.

Meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) advised residents to brace for a significant temperature drop this weekend as cold air moves southward across Taiwan. Lin cautioned that temperatures could dip to 13 degrees Celsius (55°F) in areas north of central Taiwan, with daytime highs in the north and northeast hovering between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius (70 to 73°F). Lin advised residents in central and southern Taiwan to dress warmly due to significant temperature differences between day and night.

Weather expert Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) shared in his column that weather conditions may improve Wednesday, with mostly cloudy skies and occasional light rain in the east. Wu noted that from Thursday night to Friday (Dec. 11-12), increased moisture may bring brief showers to the northern coast, eastern Greater Taipei, and eastern regions. The temporary improvement precedes a more significant cold front expected later in the week.

European model simulations predict a further temperature drop starting Saturday (Dec. 13) as cold air continues its descent across Taiwan. Wu highlighted that starting Sunday (Dec. 14), the cold air mass will bring dry and clear weather, but temperatures could approach 10 degrees Celsius (50°F) in some lowland areas. Wu emphasized the need for ongoing observation due to scientific limits of weather modeling. ◼
