TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan approved Nvidia's overseas headquarters in Taipei Wednesday (Jan. 7), with architect Kris Yao (姚仁喜) set to design the facility. The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) granted approval, Vice Mayor Lee Shu-chuan (李四川) announced Wednesday afternoon. The headquarters will be located at Beitou Shilin Technology Park (BSTP, 北投士林科學園區), a major tech hub in northern Taipei. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳) is expected to visit Taiwan by late January for the signing ceremony, Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) confirmed earlier Wednesday.
Lee said Nvidia will submit its investment proposal to the city government by mid-January, noting that Huang has specific requirements for the headquarters' design. Huang invited Yao, who visited Nvidia's U.S. headquarters and met with him several times, to design the facility. Yao has incorporated design modifications into the urban planning review, scheduled for Sunday (Jan. 26), as the city prepares for Huang's visit.
Lee emphasized both the investment proposal and urban planning changes will be completed by late January, with staff units handling contract details. Addressing traffic concerns, Lee outlined plans to transform BSTP into an "intelligent science park," integrating metro networks to Taipei, Shezidao (社子島), a sandbar island in the Tamsui River, and the Luzhou-Shezi Bridge (蘆社大橋), while testing an unmanned driving system.
Lee highlighted Taipei's successful bid to host the 2029 Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress, secured during his visit to Dubai last year. The science park will feature autonomous driving systems connecting the park with metro stations, enhancing transportation innovation in the region. ◼
