TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Sport (運動部) pledged NT$64 million in support of Taiwan's national baseball team on Tuesday (Jan. 20), ensuring the team is well-equipped for the tournament set to start on March 5 in Tokyo, Japan. The team began its training at the Taiwan Sports Training Center (國家訓練中心) on Jan. 15 in preparation for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Deputy Minister Cheng Shih-chung (鄭世忠) announced at the ministry's year-end media conference that the funding will come from the Sports Development Fund (運動發展基金), which is not subject to the government's annual budget review. This allows for immediate allocation with ministerial approval. "In other words, the funding required to assemble the team for this year’s Classic has not been affected by the ongoing review of the government budget," Cheng noted.
The Taiwanese team will compete in a group alongside South Korea, Japan, Australia, and the Czech Republic. Cheng emphasized that the ministry's support includes logistics and administrative operations, such as ensuring reliable internet access and addressing the intelligence-gathering team's needs. "The ministry’s support for the Classic includes logistics and administrative work, such as ensuring local internet connectivity and helping meet the needs of the intelligence-gathering team," he stated.
If the competition progresses to Miami, the ministry will also assist in resolving transportation, accommodation, and communication issues with overseas offices. This comprehensive support aims to enhance the team's performance and ensure seamless operations throughout the tournament.
