TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) forecasted a continental cold air mass impacting Taiwan on Thursday and Friday (Jan. 22-23), bringing chilly conditions to the central and northern regions, as well as the northeast and east. The rest of the island will experience cold mornings and evenings, with cooler daytime temperatures.
The CWA reported that rain is expected on Thursday along the northern coast of Keelung and the mountainous areas of Greater Taipei, with a chance of heavy rain. Northern areas from Taoyuan and the northeast may see brief showers, while scattered showers could occur in the east, Hsinchu-Miaoli areas, southeast, Hengchun (恆春) Peninsula, and central, southern mountain areas. Most other regions will remain cloudy.
Brief showers will continue on Friday along Keelung's northern coast, in Greater Taipei, and in the northeast and east. The southeast, Hengchun Peninsula, and northern mountain areas may experience scattered showers, while other regions may see partly cloudy to sunny skies. The continental cold air mass will weaken on Saturday (Jan. 24), leading to a gradual daytime temperature rise, although radiative cooling will keep mornings and evenings cold, especially in central and southern Taiwan, where temperature differences between day and night will be significant.
The weekend will mostly be partly cloudy to sunny, with isolated showers in the eastern region, while fog or low clouds may affect visibility in central and southern areas in the early mornings. The northeast monsoon will strengthen on Jan. 27, cooling the north and northeast, with brief showers expected on Jan. 28.
