TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Environment (環境部) convened a meeting on Thursday (Jan. 22) to discuss principles for using green procurement by private enterprises and groups in 2026. Officials announced plans to enhance green procurement recognition mechanisms to be more inclusive and motivating, aiming to bolster Taiwan's green procurement landscape.

The ministry revealed that units reporting green procurement amounts reaching at least NT$50 million will receive electronic certificates, with their names published on the "Net-Zero Green Life Information Platform" (環境部淨零綠生活資訊平臺). This initiative aims to publicly acknowledge and encourage significant contributions to sustainable development.

The ministry emphasized that green procurement is fundamental to Taiwan's net-zero transition, with private green procurement reaching NT$74.3 billion in 2024 and likely surpassing NT$80 billion in 2025. To realize the 2050 net-zero emissions vision, the ministry has set a long-term goal of increasing private green procurement amounts by 10% annually. This expansion includes using public transportation, circular products or services announced by the Resource Circulation Administration (循環署), and carbon footprint-labeled items.

An innovative approach encourages substituting leasing for purchasing, aiming to reduce waste at its source. Green procurement has become a competitiveness indicator for enterprises, with the Taiwan Stock Exchange's ESG evaluation in October 2025 listing, which was awarded by the Ministry of Environment for outstanding green procurement as an additional scoring item.

The ministry has uploaded the "Green Procurement Disclosure Guidelines" to the Corporate Governance Center's (公司治理中心) website. These guidelines help enterprises accurately disclose their green performance in their sustainability reports. The 2026 commendation principles will continue the group evaluation model, offering opportunities for recognition across manufacturing, non-manufacturing, and other sectors.
