TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a cold surge advisory, predicting that temperatures will hover around 10 degrees Celsius in areas north of Miaoli and Kinmen on Friday (Jan. 23). Lienchiang could experience temperatures dropping to 6 degrees or lower.
The CWA warned that orange cold alerts are in effect for New Taipei City, Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Kinmen County, and Lienchiang County. Meanwhile, yellow alerts are in effect for Taichung City, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan City, and Kaohsiung City. Meteorologists expect sporadic showers in Keelung's northern coast and parts of Taipei, with cloudy to clear skies in other areas.
The Taichung City Government Fire Bureau (台中市政府消防局) reported 10 cardiac arrest cases from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning, with five individuals, aged 55 to 88, receiving emergency treatment. Weather forecasts suggested that the cold front will weaken from Friday to Saturday, with temperatures gradually rising. However, another cold air mass is expected to hit Taiwan next Tuesday (Jan. 27), potentially causing temperatures to dip again.
Experts advise the public to dress warmly, especially the elderly and those with cardiovascular conditions, due to the cold weather. Predicted low temperatures range from 11 to 13 degrees in the northern and Yilan regions, 13 to 14 degrees in the south, and 14 to 15 degrees in Hualien and Taitung. The Administration urges people to monitor weather updates and adjust clothing appropriately to prevent colds.
