TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A news van from Sanlih Entertainment Television Inc. (三立電視台), a major Taiwanese broadcaster, crashed into a Chang Hwa Bank (彰化銀行) branch in Taipei's Zhongshan District (台北市中山區) on Friday (Jan. 23), injuring 10 people. The accident occurred at approximately 3 p.m., and authorities are investigating the cause.

The crash resulted in three people sustaining serious injuries, one with moderate injuries, and six with minor injuries. Emergency responders transported the injured to various hospitals, including National Taiwan University Hospital (台大醫院) and Jen-Ai Hospital (仁愛醫院). The driver claimed a sudden increase in the vehicle's RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) led to the loss of control. Police found no evidence of drunk or drugged driving, but continue to investigate the cause.

Sanlih Entertainment Television issued a statement expressing regret for the injuries and damage to the bank's facilities. The company pledged to take responsibility for compensation and legal obligations, ensuring the injured receive proper medical care. Attorney Huang Hsiu-hui (黃秀惠) noted that the driver could face charges under Article 284 of Taiwan's Criminal Code (刑法) for negligent injury. Prosecutors and police will decide charges based on the severity of the victims' injuries.

Huang also highlighted that the bank and individuals could seek compensation for damages under Articles 195 and 184 of Taiwan's Civil Code (民法). The television station is potentially liable for civil damages. Investigations continue as authorities work to determine the full legal and financial repercussions of the incident. ◼
