TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A ruling party legislator on Thursday (Jan. 29) accused Taiwan's main opposition party of hypocrisy over its treatment of former members as Lee Hung-chun (李鴻鈞) prepares to lead the Control Yuan (監察院), the government's watchdog agency. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator Ariel Chang (張雅琳) questioned whether the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) now considers Lee, a former KMT member, an outsider.

President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) issued a decree on Wednesday (Jan. 28) announcing the resignation of Control Yuan President Chen Chu (陳菊), effective Feb. 1, and appointing Lee as acting president. The KMT urged Lee to transcend party lines in his new role. DPP legislator Chung Chia-pin (鍾佳濱) praised Lee's commitment to constitutional principles during his tenure as vice president, stating he kept the watchdog agency above party politics.

Chang said resolving political divisions rests with the KMT, urging the opposition party to reconsider its stance. Chung called on opposition parties to welcome diverse talents into the Control Yuan and expressed hope Lee would stabilize the institution. He accused the KMT of inconsistency, noting the party previously defended Taiwan's five-power constitutional system but now seeks to dissolve the Control Yuan alongside the Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨). ◼
