TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's benchmark stock index fell 472.52 points on Friday (Jan. 30), closing at 32,063.75, a 1.45% decline, with trading volume reaching NT$907.11 billion (around US$28.9 billion). The weighted index opened at 32,555.52 points, hitting an intraday high at the same level and a low of 32,004.96 points. Textile stocks led the decline among eight major categories, dropping 1.82%, followed by machinery and electronics stocks at 1.55% and paper stocks at 1.44%.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) closed at NT$1,775 (around US$56.6), down NT$30 (around US$0.96), dragging the broader market down by approximately 240 points. Foxconn (鴻海) ended at NT$220.5 (around US$7.03), falling NT$3.5 (around US$0.11). ASPEED (信驊), known as the "stock king," dropped below NT$9,000 (around US$287), closing at NT$8,880 (around US$283), down NT$435 (around US$13.9), contributing to a 1.54% decline in the electronics index.
Despite Friday's decline, the Taiwan stock market posted a weekly gain of 102.24 points and a robust monthly increase of 3,100.15 points, indicating strong performance over the past month. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳) visited Taiwan on Thursday (Jan. 29), reporting smooth progress in mass production of all Vera Rubin chips, the company's next-generation AI processors. AI-related stocks declined despite Huang's positive outlook on chip production progress.
Innolux (群創), Powerchip (力積電), Macronix (旺宏), UMC (聯電), and Walsin Lihwa (華新) led trading volume on Friday's session. Leading gainers included Hanns Touch (精金), Nanya Technology (南亞科), Zenitron (增你強), Cemestar (台富), and Unimicron (欣興), with memory stocks boosted by Sandisk's (晟碟) better-than-expected performance. Top decliners included Yuanta S&P GSCI Gold 2x Leveraged ER Futures ETF (期元大S&P黃金正2), Amia (昶昕), Canon (佳能), Loop Telecom (星通), and Cybertek (榮科).
