TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A cold front and strengthening northeast monsoon will bring cooler temperatures to northern and northeastern Taiwan starting Saturday (Jan. 31), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). The weather shift will intensify as the monsoon or a continental cold air mass moves southward across the island. Cooler conditions will persist through early February before temperatures begin rising.

Central and northern Taiwan, and the northeast, will see cooler temperatures on Sunday (Feb. 1), with the rest of the island experiencing cooler mornings and evenings, the CWA reported. Brief showers are expected in central and northern regions, and in the northeast throughout the day. Scattered rain is forecast for the east, southeast, Hengchun (恆春) Peninsula, and southern mountainous areas as moisture levels remain elevated.

The northeast monsoon or cold air mass will continue influencing Taiwan's weather from Monday to Tuesday (Feb. 2-3), maintaining cooler conditions in the north and northeast, the CWA noted. Other regions will also experience cooler mornings and evenings during this period. Abundant moisture will bring brief showers to the north, northeast, east, and central mountainous areas, with scattered rain in the central, southeast, Hengchun Peninsula, and southern mountainous regions.

Temperatures will begin rising on Tuesday (Feb. 3) as the monsoon or cold air mass weakens, the CWA anticipated. The eastern regions, Keelung's (基隆) northern coast, and the greater Taipei mountainous area may see brief showers, while other areas will be mostly cloudy to sunny. From Wednesday to Friday (Feb. 4-6), most regions will enjoy partly cloudy to sunny skies, with only the southeast and Hengchun Peninsula experiencing isolated, brief showers. ◼
