TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The acclaimed rock musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" will make its Taiwan debut at the National Theater & Concert Hall (國家戲劇院) from June 18 to June 21. The Olivier Award-winning production, directed by Timothy Sheader and choreographed by Drew McOnie, premiered in London's Regent's Park in 2016 and won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. Musical theater icon Andrew Lloyd Webber and songwriter Tim Rice created the rock musical, which debuted in 1971.

The production performed at London's Barbican Centre in 2019 before embarking on a U.K. tour, and the Asian tour will also visit cities including Manila and Singapore. The musical is known for its fusion of rock, drama, and faith elements, drawing audiences into its powerful storytelling through the emotional struggles of its characters. The narrative unfolds from Judas Iscariot's perspective, delving into the emotional struggles of characters including Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

The intense emotional exploration adds depth to the production, drawing audiences into its powerful storytelling as the Asian tour broadens its reach and impact across the region. The Taipei performances at the National Theater & Concert Hall mark a significant cultural event for Taiwan's theater community, bringing the acclaimed production to local audiences for the first time in the musical's history. ◼
