TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Digital Affairs (數位發展部) demanded an explanation from Coupang Taiwan on Tuesday (Feb. 24) regarding a data breach incident that impacted its users. The breach, which occurred in November last year, involved unauthorized access to approximately 200,000 Coupang Taiwan accounts, according to a forensic analysis by cybersecurity firm Mandiant.

Coupang, a South Korean e-commerce giant, revealed that only one Taiwan account's data was actually stored, and it did not contain highly sensitive information. To address the breach, Coupang has offered a compensation package exceeding NT$200 million, including a NT$1,000 shopping voucher for each affected Taiwan user.

The company announced that the breach stemmed from a former Coupang Korea employee who stole customer data from Korean user accounts, as disclosed on Nov. 29, 2025. Investigations determined that the accessed customer data was limited to basic contact and order information, such as customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, delivery addresses, and limited order records. No financial or payment information, login credentials like passwords, or government-issued identification data were accessed.

Coupang stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting that any accessed customer data has been viewed, shared, or transferred to any third party, nor has any customer data been misused. The company sealed and repaired the channels used by the former employee to access the system in Nov. 2025, ensuring no further risk to Coupang customer data.

Coupang plans to notify affected Coupang Taiwan customers and fulfill all obligations related to this incident in accordance with applicable Taiwan laws. Starting March 8, affected customers can access information and usage methods for the vouchers.
