Taiwan braces for weather shift Thursday (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A weak front crosses Taiwan Thursday (March 19), bringing sporadic showers to northern, eastern, and southern coastal regions as the northeast monsoon strengthens through the weekend. The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署) forecasts increased cloud cover and rain across regions north of Taoyuan, the eastern half, and Hengchun Peninsula (恆春), a popular tourist destination on Taiwan's southern tip. The strengthening monsoon will intensify weather conditions across northern and eastern Taiwan through the weekend and into early next week.

Mountainous regions in central and southern Taiwan face isolated afternoon showers due to thermal effects, while plains remain partly cloudy to clear. The front lingers over northeastern waters on Friday and Saturday (March 20-21), bringing intermittent showers to the north, east, and Hengchun Peninsula. An approaching convective cloud system threatens heavier rain for eastern coastal and mountainous areas, particularly the counties of Yilan (宜蘭) and Hualien (花蓮).

Brief showers persist in windward eastern regions and the Hengchun Peninsula from Sunday through Tuesday (March 22-24), with isolated afternoon showers in mountainous areas. The northeast monsoon weakens Sunday, pushing temperatures higher in the north and northeast, though Keelung's (基隆) northern coast may still experience brief showers. Most regions see sunny to partly cloudy weather from Sunday through Tuesday (March 23-25), except southeastern areas and Hengchun Peninsula, where isolated showers remain possible.

Weather patterns hold steady on Wednesday (March 26), with only the east, southeast, and Hengchun Peninsula seeing isolated showers. A new front and strengthened northeast monsoon arrive Thursday (March 27), cooling the north and northeast while delivering brief showers across the north, east, and Hengchun Peninsula. By Friday (March 28), the northeast monsoon keeps northern and northeastern Taiwan cool, with cooler mornings and evenings elsewhere and brief showers continuing in the east and Hengchun Peninsula.

Motorists traveling to Kinmen (金門) and Matsu (馬祖), Taiwan's outlying islands situated near China's southeastern coast, should exercise caution from Saturday through Tuesday (March 22-25), as morning fog or low clouds may significantly reduce visibility and disrupt ferry and flight operations. Authorities advise travelers to monitor local weather conditions closely and plan accordingly for potential transportation delays affecting inter-island and cross-strait services.
