TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) called Friday (April 10) for structured dialogue with Beijing to prevent cross-strait conflict following a high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平). Speaking at a press conference, Cheng emphasized the need for sustainable dialogue based on the 1992 Consensus (九二共識) to eliminate conflict triggers.

"Both sides of the strait should respect each other, transcend political confrontation, and build a cross-strait community with a shared future that is mutually beneficial," Cheng said. She advocated for a systematic solution to prevent war, aiming to make the Taiwan Strait a model for global peace and conflict resolution.

Cheng said the meeting with Xi demonstrated a shared desire for peaceful development across the strait. She expressed hope that her visit would send a clear message to Taiwan and the world about the KMT's commitment to peace. The Taiwan government, led by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民主進步黨), had urged Cheng to deliver a message endorsing sovereignty and condemning Chinese military drills around Taiwan.

Cheng's remaining Beijing itinerary includes a visit to Tsinghua University High School (北京清華附中) and a concert at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (國家大劇院) on Friday evening. Her Saturday schedule includes visits to the Palace Museum (北京故宮), the Cenotaph of Sun Yat-sen (孫中山衣冠冢), and Zhongguancun (中關村). Cheng and her delegation will visit Xiaomi Auto (小米汽車) on Sunday before returning to Taiwan. ◼
