TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's weather stabilized on Wednesday (May 6) as the current rain belt moved eastward, giving way to clearer skies. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) forecast that temperatures will exceed 30°C (86°F). Brief showers may still occur in eastern regions, the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) and mountain areas in the afternoon.

Weather company WeatherRisk (天氣風險) said Taiwan will experience warmer and more stable conditions through Thursday (May 7) as the northeast monsoon weakens and the cloud and rain area from South China moves away. Eastern regions may still see rainfall, and afternoon convection could develop in mountain areas. The rainfall will be scattered with minimal impact, though some localized downpours may occur.

A new weather front and a strengthened northeast monsoon will bring unstable conditions from Friday (May 8) through the weekend. The CWA predicted that isolated showers or thunderstorms in northern and eastern Taiwan and Hengchun may cause a slight temperature drop. WeatherRisk warned that Friday could bring widespread rainfall and thunderstorms with sudden heavy downpours when the front passes.

The weather front will persist through Sunday (May 10), with intermittent showers anticipated in northern, eastern and Hengchun regions. Other areas will experience mostly cloudy skies. The CWA advised caution due to low clouds or fog in Matsu (馬祖) from Wednesday night through Friday morning, which may affect maritime and low-altitude flights.

The CWA noted that a tropical disturbance near Guam is expected to weaken upon nearing the southeastern sea of the Philippines, posing limited impact on Taiwan. WeatherRisk said the system may strengthen into a tropical depression or mild typhoon within the next two to three days but is likely to move northward after approaching the eastern sea of the Philippines. The company suggested monitoring future forecast changes for this system. ◼
