TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei launched designated smoking areas citywide Thursday (May 7), with Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) inspecting three new negative-pressure smoking rooms in Ximending (西門町). The popular shopping district will implement a total smoking ban on June 1 to reduce secondhand and thirdhand smoke exposure. The city has established 183 smoking areas as of April 30, officials said.

A survey by the Taipei City Research, Development and Evaluation Commission (北市研考會) found that 96.2% of residents support smoke-free management at large events and crowded public spaces. The survey showed 89.6% believe designated smoking areas help reduce secondhand smoke, and 85.7% support outdoor smoking rooms in public spaces.

The city government tested smoke-free measures at Lunar New Year markets and the 2026 Taipei Lantern Festival, achieving satisfaction rates of 91.0% and 92.3%, respectively. The lantern festival marked the first comprehensive smoking ban at a major city event. Organizers set up temporary smoking areas to separate smokers and non-smokers, yielding a 92.6% satisfaction rate among participants.

The city is also promoting smoking cessation services. The TaipeiPASS app includes a "designated smoking area map" to help residents locate smoking areas, and city departments provide guidance and conduct inspections on tobacco hazards. The Health Bureau offers smoking cessation medication, educational consultations, classes, and a free quitline at 0800-636363 for residents seeking professional help. ◼
