TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A strong convective system, a large complex of thunderstorms, brought heavy afternoon thundershowers to Taiwan on Friday (May 22), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署). The CWA stated that the system will primarily develop over mountainous areas before tracking toward nearby plains and lowlands. This weather pattern could bring significant rainfall to Taiwan, with scattered showers also expected during the day.
The CWA predicted that from Sunday to Wednesday (May 24-27), Taiwan will experience warm days under the influence of southwesterly winds. Afternoon cloud cover will increase, with high temperatures ranging from 31 to 34 degrees Celsius across the island. The CWA also cautioned that residents in southeastern regions should be aware of foehn winds, strong and exceptionally dry winds, causing abnormally high temperatures.
WeatherRisk (天氣風險) highlighted a chance of rain in northern Taiwan on Friday (May 22). The company stated that moisture will decrease as the front moves eastward after Saturday (May 23), resulting in a summer weather pattern of partly cloudy to sunny mornings and isolated afternoon thunderstorms in mountainous areas.
Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) warned of an unstable atmospheric environment due to increased moisture from a stationary front over South China. Taiwan will mostly experience sunny and hot weather, but central and southern regions, as well as mountainous and nearby lowland areas, may experience sudden heavy downpours.
