TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Prosecutors in Taiwan seized 50 servers equipped with Nvidia (輝達公司) high-end chips and detained three business executives in a crackdown on suspected illegal exports, the Keelung District Prosecutors Office (基隆地檢署) announced Thursday (May 21). The operation spanned 12 locations across Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan and Taichung on Wednesday.
The suspects, identified by their surnames Yu (游), Wang (王) and Chen (陳), allegedly purchased servers in Taiwan valued at more than NT$10 million (US$317,000) each. Prosecutors alleged they falsely declared the cargo's destination as a Northeast Asian country while shipping the servers to Hong Kong and Macau.
Prosecutor Hsiao Yung-li (蕭詠勵) led officers from the Coast Guard Administration's Keelung Investigation Brigade (海巡署基隆查緝隊) in the searches. The operation yielded the 50 servers, mobile phones, computers, financial records, luxury cars and more than NT$9 million (US$286,000) in cash. Authorities detained and questioned the three suspects along with several witnesses.
A court approved prosecutors' request early Wednesday to detain the suspects on charges of document forgery and false business registration. Huang Chien-ming (黃建銘), deputy captain of the Keelung Investigation Brigade, confirmed the seizures. Intelligence reports indicate nearly 10 Supermicro (超微) servers have already reached Hong Kong, and prosecutors are tracing whether the hardware was transshipped to China. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$31.51)
