TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday (May 22) that the issue of Taiwanese travelers being unable to drive in Austria with Taiwan's International Driving Permit has prompted immediate action to negotiate driving rights for its citizens. This development follows the principle of reciprocity, which currently also restricts Austrian International Driving Permit holders from driving in Taiwan.

Negotiations Underway

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Austria has been in active discussions with the Austrian government to find a mutually beneficial solution. The office revealed on Facebook that inquiries with the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the transport ministry confirmed the non-recognition of Taiwan's International Driving Permit in Austria. Efforts are ongoing to negotiate driving rights for Taiwanese citizens, reflecting the importance of reciprocity and mutual respect in international relations.

Updates Promised

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Austria has committed to informing the public through social media and its website about any progress. This situation underscores the complexities of international travel and the need for ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure the rights and conveniences of citizens abroad. As negotiations continue, Taiwanese and Austrian citizens await a resolution allowing them to drive in each other's countries, highlighting the significance of international cooperation and understanding.
