TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Power Company (台電) on Monday (Oct. 21) confirmed that peak electricity demand daily and night remains secure during the temporary shutdown of Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant (核三廠). The Unit 2 of Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant was shut down for a 41-day overhaul, temporarily reducing nuclear power generation to zero.

Taiwan Power Company emphasized that even with reduced coal usage during the air pollution season, they can maintain a reserve margin of over 10% during daytime peaks and over 7% at night by flexibly deploying traditional units and non-carbon renewable energy.

The company plans to decommission Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant next year, following Unit 1's shutdown in late July and Unit 2's gradual power reduction on Oct. 20.

According to Taiwan Power Company, wind power generation reached nearly 3 million kilowatts on Oct. 19, setting a historical record. They noted that autumn and winter provide optimal conditions for wind power. Additionally, solar power generation can exceed 6 million kilowatts during midday, marking a significant step toward increasing the share of non-carbon electricity.

The current overhaul aims to perform equipment maintenance and replace core fuel for the next operational cycle. The timeline is subject to on-site conditions.
