NANTOU (TVBS News)—Snowfall delighted visitors at Yushan (玉山) on Friday (Jan. 10) as a strong cold air mass from the continent brought snow to the region. Snow fell for about 45 minutes, leaving a 0.5-centimeter layer, with nearby Paiyun Lodge (排雲山莊) also covered in snow. Enthusiastic visitors built small snowmen and enjoyed the frosted landscape.
Yushan National Park (玉山國家公園) officials reported that the Yushan Weather Station on the north peak initially noted only rime at 6 a.m. However, by 7:20 a.m., snow began to fall, accumulating to 0.5 centimeters. Snow continued throughout the morning, prompting staff at Paiyun Lodge to lay anti-slip mats on trails and plazas to prevent accidents. At 5:25 a.m., the lodge recorded 0 degrees Celsius, with snowfall quickly covering the area in white.
The Highway Bureau (公路局) responded to icy roads by restricting Taiwan Route 14A from Yanfeng (鳶峰) to Xiaofengkou (小風口) to vehicles with snow chains. The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) warned of low temperatures and slippery conditions in the mountains.
Yushan National Park advised that snow season control measures will remain until March 31, and urged visitors to assess risks and prepare with snow gear, such as ice axes and crampons, to ensure safety. As the snowy season continues, officials remind climbers to evaluate their physical condition and ensure their leaders have snow climbing experience.
