KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — A renowned restaurant in Kaohsiung City faced backlash on Monday (Feb. 24) after customers reported finding insects resembling fruit flies in their noodle dishes. The restaurant owner closed for a day to conduct thorough disinfection and has contacted affected customers.
A customer ordered clam seafood noodle soup on Sunday and discovered it filled with insects, sharing images of at least 20 bugs online. The restaurant refunded the customer after they reported the issue. Wu Ai-hua (吳愛華), the owner of "Guomao Wu Mama Dumplings" (果貿吳媽家水餃) apologized and suggested that vinegar might have attracted the pests.
Wu stated that the restaurant disinfects weekly and daily after closing. She emphasized that if vinegar attracts fruit flies, appropriate measures will be implemented. The city's Department of Health (高雄市衛生局) conducted an on-site inspection and plans further sampling and testing.
Guomao Wu Mama Dumplings, which started as a stall selling freshly made dumplings at Guomao Market (果貿市場), has gained popularity and become a famed eatery. Even famous political figures like Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), Eric Chu (朱立倫), and Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) frequent the restaurant. The second generation now manages the establishment.
