TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a significant boost to Taiwan's growing culinary reputation, the prestigious Taiwan Michelin Guide (臺灣米其林指南) announced Wednesday (May 7) it will broaden its evaluations beyond its current territories to encompass New Taipei City, a sprawling urban area surrounding the capital, along with Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City, regions known for their technology industry and Hakka cultural heritage. Restaurant selections for these new areas will be unveiled in the coming months, marking the guide's third territorial expansion since its initial launch in Taipei (臺北) seven years ago.
Speaking about the strategic expansion, Michelin Guide International Director Gwendal Poullennec emphasized the culinary exploration opportunities presented by these diverse regions. "The expansion aims to explore the diverse local flavors and cultural richness of New Taipei City, Hsinchu City, and Hsinchu County," Poullennec stated during the announcement. He further characterized these newly incorporated territories as unique culinary destinations that "highlight tradition and innovation, showcasing a distinct local character."
Poullennec revealed that Michelin's anonymous team of inspectors has already begun their meticulous evaluation process throughout northern Taiwan's diverse dining establishments. The announcement received enthusiastic support from Director-General Chou Yung-hui (周永暉) of the Tourism Administration (觀光署), Taiwan's national tourism authority. Chou emphasized that post-pandemic recovery strategies have included intensified efforts to promote regional culinary identities beyond Taipei. "This expansion presents new opportunities for the restaurant and tourism industries, strengthening Taiwan's global culinary and travel destination position," Chou remarked. ★
