CHIAYI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Danas struck southern Taiwan on Sunday (July 6), wreaking havoc on several regional night markets. Vendors at Humei Night Market (湖美夜市), Jialefu Night Market (嘉樂福夜市), Wenhua Road Shopping District (文化路商圈), and New Yonghua Night Market (新永華夜市) face substantial losses due to the storm's destructive power.
Humei Night Market experienced significant equipment damage, with stoves and exhaust fans scattered by the typhoon's winds. Fortunately, the storm hit outside business hours, allowing vendors time to manage the aftermath. At Jialefu Night Market, the iconic archway collapsed, and internal stalls suffered as corrugated iron sheets fell, exposing steel bars and creating a hazardous environment.
Wenhua Road Shopping District saw shopkeepers scrambling to clean up, with many goods and ingredients rendered unusable after exposure. Some businesses even reported broken glass, adding to the challenges of recovery. New Yonghua Night Market vendors faced near-total collapse of their stalls. Despite securing equipment with ropes, the severe wind and rain caused extensive damage, necessitating the purchase of new equipment.
As the affected areas recover, vendors and shopkeepers assess the damage and plan their next steps.
