TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Danas struck Tainan City, causing severe damage to the agricultural and fishing sectors. Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) visited major pomelo-producing areas, including Madou (麻豆) and Xiaying (下營), to assess the damage on Monday (July 7). Huang said that although the typhoon did not cause widespread flooding, its strong winds led to significant fruit drop in pomeloes.
Huang pointed out that preliminary estimates suggest only 10% to 30% of the harvest remains viable. The Tainan City Government plans to assist farmers in clearing the orchards and seek agricultural natural disaster relief to mitigate losses. Also, Huang mentioned that he has instructed the Agriculture Bureau (農業局) to activate a post-disaster response mechanism and coordinate with the military to support cleanup efforts. District chiefs have been asked to oversee operations and allocate manpower to help farmers personally.
The Agriculture Bureau has stated it will continue communicating with the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) to expedite the review and distribution process, ensuring farmers receive necessary support. In addition to pomelo damage, coastal areas like Beimen (北門) and Jiangjun (將軍) reported capsized fishing boats and compromised facilities. The damaged reports are being compiled urgently. Furthermore, Mayor Huang emphasized that the city government will stand with farmers and fishermen, mobilizing support and seeking subsidies to help reduce losses and restore production as soon as possible.
