TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan has not received any notification from the U.S. regarding new tariffs, Michelle Lee (李慧芝), spokesperson for the Executive Yuan (行政院), said on Tuesday (July 8). U.S. President Donald Trump announced the latest reciprocal tariff rates for multiple countries, but the initial list did not mention Taiwan.
The Executive Yuan stated that Cheng Li-chiun (鄭麗君), deputy premier, leads a government negotiation team, including Trade Representative Yang Jen-ni (楊珍妮), currently in the U.S., to discuss tariffs. Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) responded last Saturday that Taiwan-U.S. tariff negotiations are ongoing, emphasizing that industry and agriculture are key focus areas. The government aims to find a balance while protecting the most sensitive products.
Economic Minister J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) told the Legislative Yuan (立法院) on Monday that negotiations are still in progress.
Trump revealed on social media that the first batch of new tariffs will impose rates up to 40%, effective in August. According to the notification, Japan and South Korea, Taiwan's neighbors, will face a 25% tariff on exports to the U.S., while Laos and Myanmar will face the highest at 40%. Taiwan's situation remains uncertain.
