TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Two powerful U.S. senators landed in Taiwan on Friday (Aug. 29) as China and Russia conduct joint submarine operations across the Asia-Pacific, underscoring the strategic importance of their diplomatic mission. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker and Senator Deb Fischer arrived at Songshan Airport at 10:50 a.m., where Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Chen Ming-chi (陳明祺) and American Institute in Taiwan (美國在台協會) Taipei Office Director Raymond Greene welcomed them.
Wicker expressed his delight at visiting Taiwan, emphasizing the significance of meeting Taiwanese officials during global instability to discuss security, cooperation opportunities, and progress. He noted the U.S. has passed several defense measures recently, underscoring that thriving democracies are not guaranteed worldwide. The senator's remarks highlighted the critical nature of democratic partnerships in an increasingly uncertain global landscape.
The senators aim to reaffirm U.S. support for Taiwan, emphasizing security cooperation and Taiwan's defense autonomy. Wicker reiterated the importance of discussing global peace, aligning with President Reagan's "peace through strength" philosophy, and reaffirming the longstanding U.S.-Taiwan partnership. Their mission underscores America's commitment to democratic allies facing authoritarian challenges in the region.
The senators began their Indo-Pacific trip on Aug. 22, visiting key strategic locations including Hawaii (夏威夷), Guam (關島), Tinian (天寧島), Palau (帛琉), and the Philippines (菲律賓) to counter China's authoritarian expansion. Their Taiwan visit comes amid joint submarine operations by China and Russia in the Asia-Pacific region, with China set to host a parade of authoritarian leaders next week. ◼
