TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs (數位發展部) launched Monday (Sept. 1) the "AI International Technology Day" (AI國際技術日) series to showcase the latest artificial intelligence tools across the island. The initiative aims to cultivate AI talent while advancing the "Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects" (AI新十大建設), a government program announced in July to establish Taiwan as a global AI technology leader.
The ministry convened developer representatives from Apache Taipei, GitHub Star, the WordPress Taiwan community, and ideaNCU alongside tech giants including AMD, IBM Taiwan, Microsoft Taiwan, and Qualcomm for a comprehensive press conference. Jiunn-Shiow Lin (林俊秀), director of the Administration for Digital Industries (數位產業署), emphasized integrating hardware and international resources as the fundamental foundation for Taiwan's ongoing industrial development initiatives.
Taiwan's open-source community confronts significant challenges integrating international development tools effectively. The Ministry of Digital Affairs identified substantial demand for international manufacturers to conduct localized technology activities in Taiwan while providing diverse technological options. Apache Taipei will establish its inaugural Taiwan branch in October, targeting local open-source engineer development and strengthening Taiwan's international software connections.
ST Liew (劉思泰), Qualcomm's vice president, noted generative AI is transforming the industrial technology landscape, stating AI technology needs placement in both cloud and edge environments with talent as competition's key driving force. Nelson Lee (李正屹), IBM Taiwan's general manager, emphasized businesses must achieve AI readiness while focusing on AI-generated returns. Peter Wu (吳漢章), ASUS Cloud (台智雲) general manager, encouraged open-source community talent toward entrepreneurship while expressing optimism about sovereign AI commercialization opportunities.
