TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Tropical Storm Kalmaegi strengthens east of the Philippines Monday (Nov. 3), potentially becoming a moderate typhoon while tracking westward away from Taiwan. Meteorologist Wu Der-romg (吳德榮) confirmed the storm poses no direct threat to Taiwan, though officials monitor another developing tropical system near Guam for potential future impacts.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's meteorological agency, reported at 2 a.m. that Kalmaegi's center sits at 11.0 degrees north latitude and 129.7 degrees east longitude, moving west at 18 kph (11 mph). Taiwan faces increased moisture from northeast monsoon Monday through Tuesday (Nov. 4), bringing brief showers to northern regions, Yilan, Hualien, and central mountains.
Northern Taiwan temperatures range from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius (64 to 77°F), while central and southern regions experience warmer days with cooler mornings. Central and southern areas will see temperatures from 19 to 32 degrees Celsius (66 to 90°F). Wu forecasts another northeast monsoon Wednesday (Nov. 5) through Sunday (Nov. 9), delivering increased moisture and intermittent rainfall.
Kalmaegi threatens Vietnam by Friday (Nov. 7) as the storm continues westward trajectory, officials confirm. National Taiwan University (國立台灣大學) Atmospheric Science Ph.D. Lin De-en (林得恩) warns of sustained rainfall hitting Keelung's north coast, Taipei's mountainous areas, and Yilan County. The tropical system near Guam remains under close surveillance for potential Taiwan impacts.
