TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a strong wind advisory on Tuesday (Jan. 20), warning of intensified northeast winds affecting several regions, including Keelung City, New Taipei City, and Taoyuan City. These areas face the likelihood of average winds above level 6 (39–49 km/h) or gusts surpassing level 8 (62–74 km/h), urging caution among residents.
The CWA also highlighted a significant cold front, bringing daytime highs of only 15 to 16 degrees Celsius in northern and northeastern Taiwan. Temperatures will drop further to between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius overnight, making it essential for residents to prepare accordingly. Central Taiwan, Tainan, Hualien, and Taitung may also see daytime highs of 20 to 23 degrees Celsius, though stronger winds will lower the perceived temperature.
After the afternoon, temperatures will decline rapidly, necessitating warm clothing for those venturing outside. In the Kaohsiung and Pingtung area, daytime temperatures will remain at 24 to 25 degrees Celsius, but a quick drop is expected at night. Residents are advised to have jackets ready for the evening chill.
The CWA forecasted that the cold front will peak on Wednesday and Thursday (Jan. 21-22), with Taoyuan and areas north experiencing all-day cold rain and highs below 14 degrees Celsius. The cold air will persist, affecting Hsinchu to Miaoli and the Hualien and Taitung area, with daytime highs under 20 degrees Celsius. Nighttime lows could fall to 11 to 12 degrees Celsius in Tainan and northward, with a chance of dropping below 10 degrees Celsius in some areas.
