TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Weather conditions across Taiwan are set to fluctuate significantly on Thursday (March 5), with the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象局) forecasting a brief respite in the cold as the northeast monsoon weakens. Temperatures will rise, with southern regions reaching 24 to 26 degrees Celsius and other regions reaching 22 to 25 degrees Celsius. However, intermittent rain will persist in northern areas, from Taoyuan northward and in mountainous regions south of Hsinchu.
A new wave of the northeast monsoon will bring cooler weather to northern and northeastern Taiwan starting Friday (March 6) through Sunday (March 8). Temperatures will drop, with rain primarily affecting the north, eastern half, and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島). Central and southern mountainous areas will experience sporadic showers, while other regions will turn cloudy.
Despite the chill in northern Taiwan, central and southern areas will see highs of 26 to 28 degrees, highlighting a significant temperature contrast. The monsoon will briefly weaken again on Monday (March 9), allowing temperatures in northern Taiwan to rise slightly. However, the monsoon will strengthen once more from Monday through Tuesday (March 10), bringing cooler weather with lows of 16 to 17 degrees Celsius.
Coastal areas along the northern coast of Keelung, the eastern half, and the Hengchun Peninsula may experience swells, prompting the CWA to advise caution for those engaging in seaside activities. Frequent weather changes during the spring season bring successive waves of cold air. The CWA urged individuals with chronic illnesses and the elderly to take necessary precautions to stay warm.
