Strong winds hit Taiwan, advisory issued (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) issued a strong wind advisory on Wednesday (March 25) morning for western Taiwan and Penghu, warning of gusts reaching level 8 (62-74 km/h) or higher. The advisory covers Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, and Penghu, and remains in effect through Thursday (March 26) morning. Residents in affected areas should secure loose objects and exercise caution outdoors.

A frontal system passing through Taiwan on Wednesday will strengthen the northeast monsoon, the CWA announced in its morning forecast. The system brings scattered showers to Yilan, Hualien, Keelung's northern coast, Taitung, and the Hengchun Peninsula, a popular tourist destination in southern Taiwan. Other areas will remain mostly sunny or cloudy, with scattered afternoon showers expected in southern mountain regions throughout the day.

Another weak front will affect northern and northeastern Taiwan on Friday (March 27), bringing rain to central areas of the island. The CWA warned of reduced visibility due to fog through Thursday (March 26) night, urging travelers to monitor flight schedules and drive safely in affected regions. Wednesday's weak front brings slightly cooler weather to northern and northeastern Taiwan, with highs around 24 to 25 degrees Celsius (75.2°F to 77°F), while central and southern regions remain warm.

Central and southern Taiwan will remain warm, with highs reaching 31 to 32 degrees Celsius (87.8°F to 89.6°F) on Wednesday. As the monsoon weakens from Sunday (March 29), temperatures will rise significantly across the island, with highs ranging from 27 to 32 degrees Celsius (80.6°F to 89.6°F). The CWA forecasted cooler temperatures returning to the north and northeast on Monday (March 31), with sporadic showers from central to northern Taiwan.

Meteorologist Lin De-En (林得恩) noted on Facebook that Taiwan's spring weather has been shaped by fronts, the northeast monsoon, and the eastward movement of cloud and rain belts from China. These conditions have resulted in limited rainfall, primarily in northern, northeastern, and eastern regions, Lin observed. Lin predicted the pattern may change next week when the strongest spring rain front moves south on Monday (March 31), accompanied by a strengthening northeast monsoon. ◼
