TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Temperatures across Taiwan surged to midsummer levels on Monday (April 20), with southern inland areas reaching 36°C (97°F) and western regions hitting 30°C to 32°C (86°F to 90°F), the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported. Radiation cooling will drop nighttime temperatures to 18°C to 23°C (64°F to 73°F), creating a sharp day-to-night difference of up to 18 degrees.
Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said dry air following a front made Monday feel like midsummer across Taiwan. Occasional light rain fell in Hualien and Taitung amid the otherwise clear conditions. Wu said from Wednesday to Thursday morning, moisture will slightly increase, keeping skies mostly clear but with possible brief afternoon rain in mountainous areas.
Another weather front will approach Thursday as the northeast monsoon strengthens, bringing scattered showers or thunderstorms to areas north of central Taiwan. Southern and eastern regions will also see localized thunderstorms. Wu forecast that the approaching front could bring three consecutive days of rain, potentially disrupting outdoor activities through the weekend.
Meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) said the weakening northeast monsoon and southwesterly winds will reduce moisture through Wednesday. These conditions make the period ideal for outdoor activities. The front will move southward Friday, bringing scattered showers or thunderstorms from north to south through Saturday as the rain zone expands. ◼
