TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A weather front and a stronger northeast monsoon brought cooler, rainy conditions to much of Taiwan on Monday (May 4). The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported that northern and eastern areas will experience high temperatures between 22 to 25 degrees Celsius (72 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Nighttime temperatures will drop to 18 or 19 degrees Celsius (64 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit) in Yilan and Hualien.

Rain showers and thunderstorms may occur from central Taiwan northward and in Kinmen (金門) through Tuesday (May 5), as a cloud and rain band from South China moves eastward. Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said the first Meiyu front, a seasonal weather system that brings prolonged rain to East Asia, will bring unsettled conditions to the region. Temperatures will gradually drop across Taiwan, with northern areas becoming cooler, he added.

Meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) advised residents to expect brief rain or thunderstorms, with the possibility of heavy rain in some areas. He warned that the moist and cool weather will persist until Wednesday (May 6), when temperatures are expected to rise. Residents should prepare for continued unsettled conditions through midweek.

Wu forecasted a brief improvement in weather from Wednesday morning to Thursday (May 7), as the front weakens and moves away. Brief afternoon showers may still occur in mountainous and eastern areas, however. Sunny and partly cloudy skies will prevail during the day on Friday (May 8). The second Meiyu front will bring rain from Friday night to Saturday (May 9), affecting central and northern regions and southern mountain areas. ◼
